“Golf is deceptively simple and endlessly complicated; it satisfies the soul and frustrates the intellect. It is at the same time rewarding and maddening – and it is without a doubt the greatest game mankind has ever invented.” Arnold Palmer
My favorite courses all have two things in common: one, they are full of challenges and two, they have left lasting memories. Don’t get me wrong, every course comes with its own set of difficulties. It’s just that the toughest tracks make the best golfing memories for me. My all time favorite top 3 courses are well-known for their demanding tests of skill, and here they are.
Pinehurst No. 2
The nucleus of the Pinehurst Resort, Pinehurst No. 2 is one of the most celebrated golf courses in the world. The greens are definitely the biggest challenge at No. 2. I’ve had the privilege to play it 4 times so far, and I hope I get more opportunities in the future. Each time has been an incredible experience.
The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island
When a friend and fellow golfer gives you a call about a last minute chance to play the Ocean Course at Kiawah Island, you ask no questions–it’s an automatic “YES!” Unpredictable winds and incredible ocean views make this course a memorable one. Aside from the wind, the approach shots were the toughest part. There’s just no room for error. I certainly will never forget the day I played here…plus, when I came home that evening, I found out my wife and I were expecting our first child. Icing on the cake.
Pinehurst No. 4
When I think about my most memorable rounds, No. 4 just sticks out in my mind. It’s an all-around great course, and it will probably always make the cut for a favorite course no matter which courses I get the chance to play in the future.
